Under early English control, Jamaica became a haven for pirates who harassed Spanish shipping.

Samuel Sharpe, a self educated slave, was born in Jamaica in 1801. Only a third of the Jamaican planters were resident by contrast to Babados' two-third resident planters. In Lucea, the condemned were put in carts, with their arms pinioned, ropes around their neck and white caps on their heads, they eventually met their death.
