Ferro Holland also developed a technical advance in ceramic tile glaze that cut production costs in half. The city was occupied by Germany throughout most of the war, and inhabitants concerned themselves more with day-to-day survival than with frit.

As the corporation's share price plummeted from over $40 in 1989 to under $20 in 1990, takeover threats came from four directions.
